This spring, I've got two books (both distributed by Raincoast Books) to tell you about.

You've read all the pregnancy books about what to expect and dog-eared all of the birthing books. Now that the babe has arrived, what do you do now? It's very easy to morph into parent mode, forgetting how to care for ourselves as women once we take on the best job in the world -- that of being a mother. We can be overcome with feelings of guilt when we even contemplate taking time out to care for ourselves. In Oh Baby! Maria Lianos-Carbone not only gives us a road map for surviving that first year as a mother through self-care, she gives us permission to make ourselves a priority. Tips include:

  • A list of things YOU might need when you bring baby home (Think a cozy robe and your favourite snacks, not diapers and onesies)

  • Practical tips on how to deal with challenging situations, such as when you just don't feel up to receiving visitors

  • How to stop yourself from comparing yourself to other moms

  • How to re-establish a relationship with your partner, and so much more.

This book is chock full of advice on real-life situations that are very likely to crop up during that first year of mommyhood. It's written with a hefty dose of real life (there's no pie-in-the-sky advice here!) in a tone that is more like advice from girlfriend who has been there, rather than a lecture from a preachy expert. If you're a new mom or know someone who is, this book would make an awesome gift.

Next up is a book that takes a humorous look at something many families can relate to: co-sleeping. Or, more specifically, the phenomenon that occurs when your child invades your bed, gets the best sleep of his or her life and you spend the night wide awake with two tiny feet pressed into the small of your back. Sound familiar?

The Big Bed by Bunmi Laditan and Illustrated by Tom Knight is a hilarious spin on the conversation so many parents have had with their children: the "we're-going-to-move-you-into-a-big-girl-bed-and-it's-going-to-be-so-exciting-for-you" conversation. In this iteration, the man character mounts a campaign to convince her dad of the merits of his moving out of his own bed, so that the little one can have mommy all to herself. I literally LOLed at this book, as did my 10-year-old who still negotiates with Daddy to "steal his spot" if my husband isn't going to be home at bedtime.
