Create a Mission Control Centre for your family!

We all lead extremely busy lives. Between work, kids, after-school activities, appointments, chores, and our social lives, it's no wonder we feel like we are being pulled in a million different directions. It's very easy for things to fall by the wayside. What's the answer? Even in the age of smartphones where the answer to everything seems to be "there's an app for that," there's something to be said for creating a central location in your home where everyone can see what's happening and all of the flotsam and jetsam of daily life (you know, those endless permission slips, order forms, receipts, etc. that seem to grow out of every surface in our homes. By creating this "Mission Control Centre" (MCC), everyone can get on the same page and things will run much more smoothly.
The location of your MCC will depend on your family's lifestyle. What's the busiest spot in your home? Where do you pass through last when leaving the home, and where do you enter first when you get home? That's the best spot for your Mission Control Centre because everyone will see it multiple times per day. Think of it as a launching pad, the spot where everyone can grab what they need before heading out the door, check any appointments that are coming up, grab any forms that are due, etc.
The centrepiece of a good MCC is a good calendar. Which one you choose will depend on your family's particular needs, but there are a few things that will be common to all good Mission Control Calendars:
Make it big!
This is not the time for a discreet calendar; make it big! This calendar needs to be big because it needs to have enough room in it to track the comings and goings of the entire family clearly and in an organized way.
Make it fun!
Nothing says the calendar has to be boring just because it has a big job to do! There are so many fun, awesome family calendars out there there's no reason you can't find out that's as fun to look at as it is useful. Here's my current favourite:
The Busy Family Planning Calendar is so bright and fun, but more than that, it's USEFUL. It has lots of space for tracking all of your family's appointments (you can even colour-code things by family member!). There are so many fun stickers included here, too. so you can draw attention to things like doctor's appointments, school holidays, and sleepovers! But my favourite stickers are the "What's For DInner" stickers. Use these stickers to keep your menu plan straight and to stave off cries of, "MOMMMMMMMMMM!!! What's for dinner?" Now everyone will know just by looking at your super-awesome calendar.
